Give Your Unwanted Bra a New Life

How many bras do you currently have in your underwear draw? Could you imagine not having a choice of which bra to wear or worse, not having a bra at all?

There are many women across the world that don’t have the luxury of owning a bra. For most of us we take the humble bra for granted and are unaware what a bra can do for ladies in need.

Most of these ladies work in some shape or form, most manual labour or at the very least picking fruit and vegetables, and cooking at ground level. A bra would control the breast swing and not only make work easier but also offer them more dignity. In the humid climates the absence of a bra leads to all sorts of medical issues as bras help with allowing air circulation and prevent chafing. Could you imagine what you would have done when you were nursing your children if you didn’t have a bra and a breast pad? Then there are those that have gone through mastectomy. These ladies have already been through so much and to have to walk around with it being so evident to all that pass her, we can only imagine the heartache and the trauma she would go through. Imagine how wonderful she would feel with a mastectomy bra!

Since 2005 Uplift, with the assistance from Intimo and Rotary Australia World Community Service, have sent millions of bras across the world to women in need without compromising their dignity. But to keep up the great work they need our support.

Cambodia December 2010

Beqa Island, Fiji. Bra distribution Easter weekend 2012 Naomi and Elina from Uplift spent five days on Beqa Island, Fiji over Easter. Nine villages in Beqa and with a female population of around 800. With five of the nine villages fitted out with over 600 women/girls having around 3-4 bras each. There were bucket loads of happy tears all around with endless words of gratitude from women and even the males on the island in seeing the joy on the faces of the ladies in their households.

Tonga 2008

If you have bras that you have out grown, no longer like, never liked, or no longer need, you can donate them to Uplift and change a woman’s life. And we know that when one woman’s life is changed, her family’s life is also changed.

A Fitting Connection is proud to say we are now a drop off point for Uplift donations, located in Greensborough. But if that doesn’t work for you, check out their website as there are drop off and collection points for your bras all around the country.

WHAT THEY NEED

  • Size 8-16, A-DD cup (30-40 / 80-100) in good condition, including crop top styles.

  • Size 18+, A-DD cup (42+ / 105+)

  • Nursing bras including crop tops, ANY condition will do. If it will catch a leak it is better than nothing, which is the alternative. Reusable nursing pads are also appreciated.

  • E cup plus, ANY size Likely to be the only properly fitting bras that a woman gets in her life.

  • Mastectomy Bras and Breast Forms (prostheses) Like gold. If possible please send the box with the breast form/prosthesis, and put the relevant bras under the plastic mould, in the bottom of the box. These will be given to hospitals for distribution. If sending bras only, without breast forms/prostheses, please put a note in the bag/postpack so we don't miss-sort them.

  • Swimwear, any size. Swimwear is great for keeping warm if you are standing in the water fishing with a hand line for a couple of hours. It is also handy for coastal women who dive for cash crops.

  • Underpants, new. In some places a girl without underpants does not go to school during her period.

  • Fabric Nappies, second hand or new. In some areas, fabric nappies are expensive to buy so mums often buy one disposable at a time. That money is better spent on food for Mum. (Nappies at drop off points in Victoria and NSW only please).

Please no bodysuits, torsolettes, shapewear, U-bras or bedroom lingerie.

When it’s time to donate, it’s really helpful if you can also leave a gold coin (or even better per bra) to help with the cost of postage.

A Fitting Connection is also fundraising for Uplift through sales of The Entertainment Book. From each book sold 20% of the profit will directly go to UpliftThe Entertainment Book is a great investment for saving on day to day dining and entertainment while also support Uplift in their fundraising efforts.
We are pleased to be working with Uplift and looking forward to putting smiles on millions of lady’s faces.
