Meet Jewlez our Pattern Maker
Recently our pattern maker Jewelz had a little time out to enjoy a well-deserved holiday. But before she left I took the opportunity to ask her a few questions for our clients and followers to get to know a little more about our team behind the scenes.
Jewelz has been in high demand over the last few months in the lead up to Chinese New Year, so I really appreciate the time she has taken to answer some questions.
1. Why do you love doing what you do?
I love fashion; it’s one of my favourite ways for personal expression & creativity. As a pattern maker I am always looking to create a perfect fit. Pattern making fulfils a personal need for a technical or mechanical perfection.
2. How long have you been in the fashion industry?
I have been in the fashion industry for around 12 years now.
[Katrina] Stop you’re making me feel old.
3. Have you always been a pattern maker?
My career started in London where I was a machinist working on uniforms for hotels, I then moved to the Netherlands where I had a position before I finally got my foot in the door as a pattern maker for a Dutch distributor company. I have been pattern making for the past 10 years, 8 of which have been here in Australia.
4. What are some of the labels/brands you have worked for/with?
The Australian Brands or labels I have worked with are Target, Jay Jays, Kmart, Anthea Crawford, Jacqui E, Sportsgirl, and Myer brands such as Hi There, Jayson Brunsdon, Trent Nathan, Piper & Tokito.
5. What has been your most rewarding job?
One of the most rewarding parts of my role is seeing the finished product in store and knowing I played a part in its creation.
6. What was the best brand to work for?
One of my favourite brands to work with was Sportsgirl. We were always developing new ranges and I was able to have input into some creative ideas.
7. What excites you about the future in fashion?
What excites me about the future in fashion is the fact that there are always new and upcoming small labels taking on the big guys. Now more than ever the small independent labels have just as much opportunity to become popular and successful as the big corporate labels.
8. What would you like to see more of in the industry?
I would like to see more natural fibres and fabrics being used again, plus more support for our local industries such as wool. I think it’s time the fashion industry pushed forward with more ethical practices and environmental mindsets to not only start creating a superior product but a better future for the industry and Eco system.
[Katrina] You need to check out Styelle Bikinis and their range of bio-degradable swimwear. I think this is a really exciting time for the future of fashion.
9. What are your favourite brands and why?
I currently don't have a favourite brand. Mostly I am inspired to make my own creations, I like to do a lot of up-cycling of clothes that I have bought from the op shop and give them a new lease of life, or create my own garments from scratch.
10. Moving away from the fashion industry, what makes your heart sing?
My most favourite thing in the world is dancing; I don't get out much anymore so my kitchen dance floor is my new hot spot! Besides that I love photography, art, travel & driving my 1969 Mini.
[Katrina] You don't know it yet but I have great plans for you and your photography skills. We have just launched Connect, Style & Shoot and I can see the two of us working really well together at our Melbourne photo-shoots
Thank you so much for sharing your passion and a little insight to the person that you are Jewelz. It’s an honour to have you as a part of our team here at ‘A Fitting Connection’. Now let’s have a drink to the future of fashion and the independent businesses/brands that we love to support.
